3、lent, he spent his youth performing in local musicals. While in university, Wang landed a recording contract in Taiwan. His breakthrough album firmly established him as a rising star in the Asian music scene. In addition to writing and producing his own music, Wang has also taken part in movie proje
4、cts around Asia. He has won a great popularity, and now he is having an interview with CNN Talk Asia. 61. ___________________ WL: It is a school of hip hop, which is the way I like to think of it. It combines Chinese elements and sounds. I started it off in my last album called Shangrila. And this
5、 album combines the music of ethnic minorities, in China, in Tibet, and in Mongolia. It’s beautiful and original to Chinese culture. And this new album called Heroes of Earth combines Opera and Quen-chu, which are thousand-year-old traditions also unique to Chinese culture. Very unique instruments,
6、costumes, singing styles. I don’t think anyone has ever done this before in the hip hop world. 62. ___________________ WL: Um, just the large quantity of work that I have to come up with. I produce for other artists and compose for them as well. And there are a lot of changes in music going on r
7、ight now in Asia. And it’s really exciting so I decided that I’m going to need a studio in New York. I’m going to need a studio in Taipei. And maybe the rest I can get by with just my laptop. 63. ___________________ WL: Well, I started doing musical theatre. And I loved it so much from the age of
8、13, you know. Actually in 2000, I did my first movie and ever since then I’ve been enjoying doing movies. I don’t think I’m much of an actor. But I just love being surrounded by creative people and a lot of times doing music is a lonely struggle, especially composing, and arranging, producing my own
9、 albums. Acting, every day you get called and you’re surrounded by other actors and creative people. 64. ___________________ WL: The first time I won, like you just said, when I was 22, it meant a lot to me. It was like…I didn’t know I could make this happen. I didn’t know I could get this kind of
10、 recognition. So back then, it was huge increase of confidence. And I don’t want to say vanity(虛榮心), but confidence. I think every artist needs confidence. 65. ___________________ WL: Well, it can be a real pain in the neck. You know, I feel lucky that I can go back to New York and not be recogniz
11、ed and not be followed. At times it can be really, really annoying. Today many people own a cell phone that has a camera on it… and a blog. In the entertainment news, there’s a recent trend of journalists or media just going on to the Internet and saying “Oh, so and so saw so and so.” when they see
12、a blog. 15、y own volition to fully immerse myself with the Chinese. I realized that the difference in going to a country as a tourist or having been able to reside for more than a year as a student is that there are things which you will only be able to appreciate and value as you go along with time. In the fo
16、rmer, your mind is quick-set in a sense that you tend to pounce on the fun and recreation. There’s nothing wrong with it but to be able to assimilate the culture, you need longer time to realize why they act they why they do, and the rationale behind those acts. 62:
17、 Aaron Jed B. Rabena:In studying in China, I did not just learn my major from within the classroom but also from without. I greatly appreciate the fact that China has a very rich and unique culture that is well-sustained and has been valued by its people for thousands of years. I, for one, have been
18、 accustomed to the observance of it, from their cultural events, to the cultural traits and to their cuisines. In addition, I have travelled into some of the cities in China and I can’t help but to be fascinated by the magnificence of its cities such as Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, Chongqing and Wu
19、han. The historical ancient sites are well-preserved to remind locals and tourists alike of their prestigious heritage. 63: Aaron Jed B. Rabena:Shandong province is the place where the eminent Chinese sage Confucius was born. As I am studying in its capital city Jina
20、n, you cannot help but notice the amicability and kindness of the people which only goes to show that the values Confucius espoused thousands of years ago are still widely practiced. I remember that when I was on the train to go to Shanghai to see the ‘Shanghai Expo 2010,’ I was not able to book my
21、ticket early which made me displaced inside the train and bear the burden of standing for three hours, but then some Chinese discovering that I am a foreigner seeming helpless and unable to speak their language, found a seat for me when other passengers alighted the train. 64:
22、 Aaron Jed B. Rabena:In fact, I have been oft-times mistaken as a Chinese when people suddenly ask me for some directions which I just reply by making short statements or admitting that I am not Chinese. I even had the privilege of celebrating the Chinese New Year in the countryside in Hu
23、bei province upon the invitation of my Chinese friend. Chinese New Year is their version of the Western Christmas and New Year combined. It is a time where families eat in a banquet together, exchange gifts and well-wishes with each other. There, I was treated like a part of the family. It was also
24、there I learned that when you cheer your glass with an older person, his glass should be higher than yours as a sign of respect. These signs of respect and obedience are values that are very admirable about the Chinese. 65: Aaron Jed B. Rabena:From my interactions wi
25、th the Chinese, I realized that China also has immense diversity when it comes to their dialects where almost every province has its distinct sub-culture to be proud of. The cuisines vary from province to province and each has its own specialty or delicacy to brag about. Those in the North like nood
26、les and dumplings, while those in the South are fond of rice.
