Period 1: Warming up and Pre-reading
Teaching aims:
1) to help the students learn about the history ,motto and some events of the Olympics games.
2) to help the students learn about the similarities and differences about the ancient and modern Oly
2、mpics and lay a solid foundation for the reading passage.
3) to input some words and expressions. ( stadium, motto, petitor, athlete, torch, mascot, swift……)
Teaching tools: puter, some cards
Teaching procedures:
Warming-up
Step 1.Lead-in
Play the BeiJing Olympic song “You and Me” for the stu
3、dents to draw their attention. And go through some pictures to recall some wonderful moments of the BeiJing Olympics and learn some words which concern the topic of this unit.
Step 2. Quiz
Let the students finish a quiz and some questions to learn how well they know the Olympics

4、 1. Discussion
Let the groups of students have a discussion about the similarities and differences about the ancient and modern Olympics first and then let some students state the results of their discussion in class.
For reference:
The similarities
① Both are held every four years.
② Both are
5、held not for money but for honor.
③ The mottoes are the same. They are: Swifter, Higher, and stronger.
④ Men are allowed to take part both in ancient and modern Olympics.
⑤ Some events are the same, such as running, jumping, shooting and throwing.
The Differences
① There were not winter Olympic
6、s in the past.
② Now petitors are from all over the world. But in the ancient time, only the people in Greece could take part.
③ Only men were allowed to take part in the past, now woman are also allowed.
④ In the past, winners got the olive wreath as the prize. Now petitors pete for medals.

7、he events and athletes in modern time are more than those in the past.
⑥There is a special village for the petitors to live in, a stadium for petitions, a gymnasium for these who watch the games now. But there were not in the past.
Step 2. Activities
1) to let the students brainstorm some events in summer Olympics.
2) to do “A guess game” to help the students remember these events.
Step 3. Homework
Make up a dialogue with your partner, talking about the similarities and differences about ancient and modern Olympics.
