One saying is that it originated from the religious ceremony or offering sacrifices (供品). The ancient people cut papers into animals or people. They either buried them with the dead or burned them on the funerals, wishing that things that paper stand for could be with the dead. Later, they were used during festivals to decorate gates and windows. Located in New York City’s Museum Mile area, it has over two million works of art within its permanent collection, which is divided into 19 sections of interest. The Met’s American paintings section also has one of their earliest sculptures from 1870 on display. Hiram Power’s California was one of the first pieces that inspired them to focus building the museum around American art. Their art section features paintings by Michelangelo, Rembrandt and Van Gogh amongst its 11,000 paintings on hand. The J. Paul Getty Museum in Los Angeles is a privatelyrun museum that has a wide collection of European art, Greek and Roman sculptures, and classic drawings. The museum also has an extensive collection of American photography collection, which is one of the only areas within its museum that focuses on American areas of interest. There is also a research center that was opened in 1985, where staff researches information about the artifacts that exist and makes sure that the information being presented can be used in publications and workshops for presentation purposes. The Musee du Louvre in Paris, France is one of the oldest, famous and most visited museums in the world, known as a place where artists were allowed to showcase their art since the early days in the 1700s. The museum was formally opened in 1750, and much of France’s much neglected artists were allowed to present their works in this museum. Not many Londoners know it either, but Henri does and he is willing to show it to you. Henri used to sleep in parks until he met a charity (慈善機構(gòu)) that helps homeless people get back on their feet by becoming tour guides. Rather than show traditional London sights, “Unseen Tours” take people off the beaten track. Henri has been teaching tourists about the history and architecture of Shoreditch, where he slept on public benches for three years. When he felt separated from the society, contact with the volunteer network “The Sock Mob” gave Henri hope. “Not everyone just looked down on me,” he said. The tours aren’t the only actions trying to help those who have suffered a misfortune to stand tall again. An innovative (創(chuàng)新的) college for homeless people in London, the first of its kind in the country, is attracting hundreds of students. The Recovery College, set up by St Mungo’s charity, is providing courses designed to improve technical skills and life skills. According to Andy Williams, who helps to organize the college, the most popular courses have proved to be about raising selfconfidence and developing selfpride. Steve, now in his 50s, told a reporter how much of a difference it makes to “have a bit of confidence”. He had difficulty learning to read and had to leave school when he was 12. Because Steve’s problem was not recognized at the time, he was “seen to be unable to read or write”, and suffered with depression and alcohol addiction. He says the status of “student” is itself important for people who are used to being treated as outcasts (被遺棄者). Some charities aim not only to help the homeless become independent but also to make them popular. The Homeless World Cup started ten years ago. Today the tournament draws teams from 48 countries made up of playersmen and womenwho are, or have been, living in the streets. After his first painting, a portrait (肖像), was accepted at the Salon of 1840, Millet returned to Cherbourg to begin a career as a portrait painter. However, the following year he married PaulineVirginie Ono, and they moved to Paris. After being refused at the Salon of 1843 and Pauline’s death, Millet returned again to Cherbourg. In 1845 Millet moved to Le Harvre where he painted portraits for several months, before moving back to Paris. It was in Paris in the middle 1840s that Millet made friends with many famous artists who had great influences on him. Then he gradually revolutionized his painting style and created his own one. This is the most well known of Millet’s paintings, The Gleaners (拾穗者), in which poor women and children are removing the bits of grain left in the fields following the harvest. A warm golden light suggests something holy (神圣的) in this daily scene where the struggle to survive takes place. During his years of studies, Millet thought about how to best tell the sense of repetition and tiredness in the peasants’ daily lives. Lines traced over each woman’s back to the ground and then back up again and again which means their hard labor. Along the horizon (地平線), the setting sun outlines the farm with its plentiful stacks of grain, in contrast to the large shadowy figures in the foreground (前臺). The dark dresses of the gleaners cut strong forms against the golden field, giving each woman a noble strength. In 1857, he presented the painting The Gleaners to the Salon to an unfriendly public. 12.What does the warm golden light in the painting imply? A.Poor women and children are very hardworking. B.People should go home and have a rest. C.It is a very nice day which promises a good harvest. D.Something related to religion deserves our respect. 13.It can be inferred from the passage that ________. A.A creative way of doing things. B.New hope for the future. C.Doing the same thing many times.
