1、Lesson plan Unit 8 When is your birthday? Section B 1a - 1d Teaching ideology The current theory view listening and speaking as an interactive process which involves not only the teacher’s part but also the students’ reactions. Meanwhile, the teacher is responsible for students’ emotional devel
2、opment in class. In the interactive process,the role that the teacher plays is a learning guide and a heart guide. The students are the main characters who learn, speak and create. Based on the understanding of listening and speaking as an interactive process, this class is divided into four steps.
3、The four steps are pre-listening which includes leading -in, reviewing and vocabulary learning, while-listening, post-listening and emotional sublimation . They should be arranged gradually. Teaching material and learning condition The analysis of teaching material The teaching material is Modul
4、e 3, Unit 8 from Go For It , Book A for Grade 7. The topic of this unit is about date and events. This part mainly talks about the dates of some school events . The part consists of 1a, 1b, 1c and 1d. The part of 1a is a general introduction of four events in order to encourage students to think of
5、more events. The listening part of 1b requires students to listen and circle the events after they listen to a dialogue. The listening part of 1c needs students to listen and fill in the calendar. The last part is designed to ask students to describe John’s calendar. The analysis of learning condit
6、ion The students are from Grade 7 in junior high school. As junior high school students in Grade 7,they have only achieved a small number of words and phrases and they only have the ability to use the limited number of sentences to talk about the dates or events. So it is very important for the tea
7、cher to input the target language gradually and set enough examples for students to follow. They are familiar with the topic of the dates about birthday and know some events like ball games. But they may not know how to make their own calendars or even describe the events in their calendars before,
8、especially use different adjectives. Moreover, their vocabulary is limited so they may have difficulties in understanding some sentences. Event, trip, calendar are the new words in this part.According to such specific factors that students have great trouble in memorizing special days and they are u
9、nwilling to communicate more with their parents at the period of their ages, the reviewing part from pre - listening designed by the teacher is to help students pay more attention to the special days. The post - listening part encourages students to create and describe their own calendar by using th
10、e inputs they got in this class. Finally, the teacher try to recall their deep love by playing a video about mothers so that they have the eager to communicate more with their parents. Learning objectives 1. Language skills l At the beginning of the class, students can review the dates by chanti
11、ng and answering the questions. l Students can extend their old knowledge to learn similar new words and phrases like Lantern Festival, Christmas Party, volleyball game and so on by brainstorming. l Students can understand the main idea, circle the events and fill in the calendar step by step.
12、l Students can describe the calendars and create their own calendars after they get enough inputs by listening and repeating out loud the listening materials. 2. Language knowledge l Students can review the dates and events which involve the words like first, fifth, ninth, twelfth, thirtieth, and
13、events like Children’s Day, Women’s Day. l Students can master the key words of the listening material, such as event, trip, test, calendar. l Students can use target sentences to talk about the events, which are “the ... is on ...” or “ on ... we have ...” l Students can use adjectives to descri
14、be events so as to get ready for the next period. 3. Affects l Students will get to know more about their classmates and parents by having the awareness of memorizing their birthdays in mind, especially knowing that we are supposed to be thankful to our mothers. l Guide students to make a small g
15、ift for mothers on Mothers’ Day. 4. Cultural awareness l Students will learn more about the school events by listening to a dialogue about calendar. 5. Learning strategies l Students will cultivate their abilities of individual learning and cooperative learning by answering questions independen
16、tly and some in pairs and groups. l Students will communicate with each other in English while doing the group work. Language focuses and anticipated difficulties Language focuses This is a listening and speaking period so the focus is to cultivate the students’ listening skills and speaking ski
17、lls. All the activities are designed to help students to train their listening and speaking skills, such as chanting, asking and answering, listening and describing. It is also important for the students to master the new words and sentences and use them in daily talk. Anticipated difficulties As
18、 the Students have limited vocabulary, so they may have some difficulties in brainstorming or even pronouncing some long words or phrases. So the teacher will help them learn the new words and phrases by showing many pictures related to their own everyday school life and correcting some pronunciatio
19、ns. Teaching method Five - step model: Based on the understanding of listening and speaking as an interactive process, this class is divided into four steps. The four steps are pre-listening which includes leading -in, reviewing and vocabulary learning, while-listening, post-listening which involv
20、es reading, describing and creating and emotional sublimation . They should be arranged gradually. Teaching aids Multimedia devices and PPT documents: In order to help Students to fully understand the new words and the dialogue, I adopt Multimedia devices and PPT documents to bring the real-lif
21、e pictures into the classroom. At the same time, I downloaded a moving video about mother’s hard work which will make the hearts strongly touched. Teaching procedures Step1. Pre-listening (9 min) Activity1. Greetings and chanting (1min) T leads students to review the important words about dates
22、by asking students to listen and chant after the tape. T: Hello, boys and girls. I am Max. Nice to meet you. Are you ready for class? (Students say hello to the teacher and get ready for class) T: First, let’s listen to the chant. (Students listen to the chant for the first time.) T: Now, let
23、’s clap and chant after the tape. (Students clap and chant after the tape.) T: What is the chant about? (Students answer it is about date.) Activity2. Date-reviewing (2min) T asks a question and shows some pictures about dates and events to review and learn new words. After seeing the pictures,
24、 students are expected to brainstorm more events. T: What’s the date today? (One student answers: It is ...) T: Shows some dates and ask: What’s the date? What is special on that day? ( Students answer one by one according to the pictures: It is ... And it is ...) Activity3. Ask about birthda
25、ys (3min) T: I will tell you a secret. My birthday is on Lantern Festival. So you know birthday is on January 15th. When is your birthday? (Two students answer the question.) T: Do you know his birthday? Ask him. (Students ask each other about their birthdays) T: You two. (Two students ask and
26、 answer the questions) T: Do you know your parents’ birthdays? (Students think about their parents’ birthdays and answer. If some students don’t know, the teacher guides students to ask their parents after class.) Activity4. Pictures - talking (3min) T guides students to talk about the pictures
27、in order to learn the new words and phrases. T: What do you do on your mother’s birthday? (One or two students answer) T: Do you give her a birthday party? (One or two students answer) T: Look at the picture. What party is it? (Students answer: It is the New Year’s party. It is on January 1st.

30、 What other events do you have in our school? (Students answer ....) l In this step,the teacher first leads students to review the dates,especially the important numbers like first, fifth, ninth, twelfth, thirtieth by asking students to listen and chant after the tape. In activity 2, the teache
31、r guides students to review the special days. In activity 3, the teacher guide students to know about their parents’ birthday and get ready for the emotional sublimation part. And in activity 4, the teacher guides students to learn the new words such as event, trip, test. At the same time, T guides
32、students practice the target sentences. Step2. While-listening (16 min) Activity 1 in 1a. Match the picture with the events.(2 min) T: I have some pictures about school events, can you match them? (T asks students to read the events and match them. ) T: Picture d is the English test. Why do you

40、vents they hear. In 1c, students try to learn the strategies of how to write the key phrases. Read aloud and role - play in order to let students pay attention to the intonations of words and sentences. Meanwhile, they can have enough inputs. Step3. Post-listening (9 min) Activity1 Introduce John'
41、s calendar (2 min) T: So now, you know about John’s calendar. Can you introduce John’s calendar like this:“In John’s calendar, the school trip is on September 26th and 27th . It is relaxing. On September 29th, they have ...” (Two or three students introduce John’s calendar.) Activity2 Design cale
42、ndars. (7 min) T: Do you like John’s calendar? What events do you like in your calendar? ( three or more students to answer) T: Ok, good. Now design your own calender. Please discuss in groups and fill in your calendar. Then one introduces your calendar like this:We are ... next two months. The .

47、 reflections The whole class can learn and handle the words, phrases and target sentences well. And students can be moved by the video so that they can take actions to show their love to their parents. However, the shortcoming is that not only the students but the teacher needs to practice more about their pronunciation. What’s more, if more students take part in the class, it will be better.
