Fairy tales were considered too entertaining for children, because childrens literature was expected to be didactic(教誨的) and moral—not entertaining. As the notions about children changed during the century, however, so did ideas about literature for children. Fairy tales gradually became more accepted, and eventually a branch of wholly entertaining childrens literature began to flourish. Critics have shown that even as fantasy gained acceptance as literature for children, it was considered unacceptable for adults to enjoy the genre. Critics remark that with very few exceptions fairy tales were written for children, featuring children as heroes. Critics have remarked that many popular authors used fairy tales to ment on the Industrial Revolution, to create ideal alternatives to unsatisfactory conditions of the real world, and to contrast Christianity with the materialism of English society. These authors wanted to restore enjoyment and recreation, inspire passion for the working class, and offer an escape from reality by reversing the known and accepted rules of the real world. Victorian fantasy literature began as a way to bine education and entertainment for children, but by the end of the century it had developed into a way to challenge a childs imagination and offer a reprieve(緩解) from the everyday world of English life. In their quest to capture the world of childhood innocence as paradise, works by fairy tale authors led to the study of the imagination, and served as a precursor to twentieth-century science fiction. 1. Which of the following can be learnt from the first paragraph? A. Fairy tales were greatly weled by English people. B. Fairy tales became more accepted than before in England. C. A. they only provided entertainment B. children were described as heroes in the works C. the language in fairy tales was too simple and childish D. fairy tale writers criticized the adult world in their works 3. The aim of fairy tale authors was to . A. publicize Christianity in the English society B. praise the living conditions of English society C. make use of new ways to appreciate the Industrial Revolution D. provide opportunities for people to escape from the modern world temporarily 4. By the end of the twentieth century, fairy tales . A. had bee a bination of education and entertainment B. had bee a way to evoke childrens imagination C. had been accepted by nearly all the people D. had influenced daily life of Englishmen 5. The underlined word “precursor” in the last paragraph probably means “ ”. A. preparation B. reprieve C. a person or thing of great help D. a person or thing that goes ahead B The traditional tent cities at festivals such as Glastonbury may never be the same again. In a victory of green business that is certain to appeal to environmentally-aware music-lovers, a design student is to receive financial support to produce ecofriendly tents made of cardboard that can be recycled after the bands and the crowds have gone home. Major festivals such as Glastonbury throw away some 10,000 abandoned tents at the end of events each year. For his final year project at the University of the West of England, James Dunlop came up with a material that can be recycled. And to cope with the British summer, the cardboard has been made waterproof. Taking inspiration from a Japanese architect, who has used cardboard to make big buildings including churches, Mr Dunlop used cardboard material for his tents, which he called Myhabs. The design won an award at the annual New Designers Exhibition after Mr Dunlop graduated from his product design degree and he decided to try to turn it into a business. To raise money for the idea, he toured the citys private panies which found new business and found a supporter in the finance group Mint. He introduced his idea to four of Mints directors and won their support. Mint has mitted around £500,000 to Myhabs and taken a share of 30 percent in Mr Dunlops business. The first Myhabs should be tested at festivals this summer, before being marketed fully next year. Mr Dunlop said that the design, which acmodates two people, could have other uses, such as for disaster relief and housing for the London Olympics. For music events, the cardboard houses will be ordered online and put up at the sites by the Myhabs team before the festivalgoers arrive and removed by the pany afterwards. They can be personalized and the pany will offer reductions on the expense if people agree to sell exterior(外部的) advertising space. The biggest festivals attract tens of thousands of participants, with Glastonbury having some 150,000 each year. Altogether there are around 100 annual music festivals where people camp in the UK. The events are being increasingly environmentally conscious. 6. “Eco-friendly tents” in the first paragraph refer to tents . A. economically desirable B. favorable to the environment C. for holding music performances D. designed for disaster relief 7. Mr Dunlop established his business . A. independently with an interestfree loan from Mint B. with the approval of the Citys administration C. in partnership with a finance group D. with the help of a Japanese architect 8. It is implied in the passage that . A. the weather in the UK is changeable in summer B. most performances at British festivals are given in the open air C. the cardboard tents produced by Mr Dunlop can be usertailored D. cardboard tents can be easily put up and removed by users 9.
