Forexample,inSinglish,youcaneasilyrecognizeinfluencesfromChinese,includingvocabularysuchas “meesiam” and “dabao”.Sentencestructureslike “toiletwhere” insteadof “where??sthetoilet” alsocomefromChinese. Interestinganddiverseasitmayseem,thetrendforSinglishisworryingSingapore??sgovernment.Itisconcernedthatthedialectisloweringthecountry??sEnglishstandardandmayaffectitsrelationshipwithvisitors.ItevenstartedtheSpeakGoodEnglishMovement. Unfortunately,theproblemisnotsolved.Instead,Singlishhasboomed,especiallyamongyoungpeoplewhothinkofitasasignofbeingcoolandawayofidentifyingthemselvesasaSingaporean.
