A 140yearold letter written by a lady calling for her to be allowed to study medicine at St Andrews University has been discovered by researchers. Written by Sophia JexBlake in 1873, the sevenpage document, which urged the university to allow women to study medicine at the institution, was released yesterday on International Womens Day. The document was discovered buried in the university archives(檔案) by parttime history student Lis Smith, who is pleting her PhD at St Andrews Institute of Scottish Historical Research. She said:“We knew that Sophia JexBlake and her supporters, in their effort to open up university medical education for women, had written to the Senatus Academicus (校評(píng)議委員會(huì)) at St Andrews in an attempt to gain permission to attend classes there, but we didnt know documentary evidence existed. While searching the archives for information about the universitys higher certificate for women,I was astonished to e across what must be the very letter JexBlake wrote.” In the letter, Sophia and her supporters offered to hire teachers or build suitable buildings for a medical school and to arrange for lectures to be delivered in the subjects not already covered at St Andrews. Although her letter was not successful, it eventually led to the establishment of the Ladies Literate in Arts at St Andrews, a distancelearning degree for women. The qualification, which ran from 1877 until the 1930s, gave women access to university education in the days before they were admitted as students. It was so popular that it survived long after women were admitted as full students to St Andrews in 1892. Ms JexBlake went on to help establish the London School of Medicine for Women in 1874. She was accepted by the University of Berne, where she was awarded a medical degree in January 1877. Types There are three kinds of ancient Egyptian architecture:buildings for the living, buildings housing the dead and religious buildings such as temples and shrines(神殿).Some of the worlds most identifiable(可辨認(rèn)的)structures e from ancient Egypt, such as the Great Pyramid, one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. ________ The regions lack of rain and wood, coupled with much sunshine, made bricks the best building material in ancient Egypt.Nile mud, when mixed with straw, produced strong bricks.Houses were made of river mud.Stone was also used, although not as much as river mud.Stone was typically used for building temples and tombs, while bricks were used in building royal palaces and fortresses.Because there wasnt much wood available,it was rarely a source for building materials. The pyramids Most historians believe the pyramids of ancient Egypt were tombs for Egypts pharaohs(法老)during both the Old Kingdom and Middle Kingdom periods.Other theories claim the pyramids were used as sundials or giant geometric(幾何學(xué)的)puzzles. The largest of the pyramids, built around 2530 B.C., was for the final resting place of Pharaoh Khufu.Until the early 1900s,it was the largest building on Earth. Temples Ancient Egyptians viewed their temples as homes to their gods.Temples could be either single buildings or huge plexes. The most important part of the temple was the shrine.It_was_there_that_the_image_of_a_god_was_housed.Many of the temples of ancient Egypt became plex building systems. Columns(石制圓柱) Architecture of ancient Egypt is known for its elegant columns, which were elaborately(精巧地)decorated with colored depictions(描述)of Egyptian life.According to the TourEgypt website, more than 30 different column forms have been found from various time periods. 1.What does the underlined word“deteriorated” probably mean? ______________________________________________________ 2.Fill in the blank with a proper title for the next part of Types. ______________________________________________________ 3.Why are bricks the best building material in ancient Egypt? ______________________________________________________ 4.Whats the most possible purpose for building the Pyramids? ______________________________________________________ 5.Translate the underlined sentence into Chinese. ______________________________________________________ 答案: 1.
