2019-2020年高考英語(yǔ)總復(fù)習(xí) 單元檢測(cè)1 第二部分:閱讀理解 A I was walking along the main street of a small seaside town in the north of England looking for somewhere to make a phone call. My car had broken down outside the town and I wanted to contact the AA pany. Low grey clouds were gathering across the sky and there was a cold damp wind blowing off the sea which nearly threw me off my feet every time I crossed one of the side streets. It had rained in the night and water was dropping from the bare trees that lined the street. I was glad that I was wearing a thick coat. There was no sign of a call box, nor was there anyone at that early hour whom I could ask. I had thought I might find a shop open selling the Sunday papers or a milkman doing his rounds, but the town was pletely dead. The only living thing I saw was a thin frightened cat outside a small restaurant. Then suddenly I found what I was looking for. There was a small post office, and almost hidden from sight in a dark narrow street. Next to it was the town’s only public call box, which badly needed a coat of paint. I hurried forward, but stopped in astonishment when I saw through the dirty glass that there was a man inside. He was fat, and was wearing a cheap blue plastic raincoat. I could not see his face and he didn’t raise his head at the sound of my footsteps. Carefully, I remained standing a few feet away and lit a cigarette to wait for my turn. It was when I threw the dead match on the ground that I noticed something bright red trickling from under the box call door. 1. At what time was the story set? A. An early winter morning B. A cold winter afternoon C. An early summer morning D. A windy summer afternoon 2. Which of the following words best describe the writer’s impression of the town? A. cold and frightening B. dirty and crowded C. empty and dead D. unusual and unpleasant 3. The underlined word “trickling” in the last paragraph means_______________ A. rushing out suddenly B. shining brightly C. flowing slowly in drops D. appearing slowly 4. Why didn’t the man raise his head when the writer came near? A. He was annoyed at being seen by the writer. B. He was angry at being disturbed by the writer. C. He was probably fast asleep. D. He was probably murdered. B Two University of Oklahoma scientists are starting research that they hope will someday lead to the development of a vaccine (疫苗) to fight against the HIV virus, which causes AIDS. The research, to be carried out by Mark Lang, an assistant professor and microbiologist John West, will examine the basic aspects of the immune (免疫) system, rather than the plex aspects of the virus. They theorize that if a key function of the body’s immune system can be found exactly, it could be the first step toward developing a vaccine. “To develop a new vaccine, we realized we first have to study and understand the immune system,” Lang said. Lang said their work will focus on researching the basic antibody responses from Natural Killer-like T-cells. A potential vaccine would contain NKT cells and would improve the immune system’s antibodies, which fight outside invaders(侵入物)such as HIV by preventing them from entering cells or giving the immune system enough of a boost to kill them. NKT cells, which have been a part of research into cancer and other diseases, have not previously been the focus of HIV research, Lang said. The research will last 18 months, with tests being performed on mice. The Oklahoma Center is giving $ 300,000 toward the research, and if the research proves promising, Lang and West will apply to the National Institutes of Health for more funding. “If we are successful, we will have made an important contribution to the field, but we will still be several steps away from an effective vaccine,” Lang said. Lang said that in best-case scenario(最好的情況),their research could lead to a vaccine ready for use in about four years. 5. The research to be carried out will focus on _______. A. the immune system B. the test performed on mice C. NKT cells D. the HIV virus 6. We can infer from the underlined sentence in Paragraph 8 that __________. A. other researchers need to help them B. the research seems to be a failure C. further research needs to be done D. the vaccine can kill all viruses 7. Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage? A. Lang works at the National Institutes of Health. B. The research will last one and a half years. C. The vaccine is ready for use. D. The AIDS virus may cause HIV. 8. What would be the best title for the passage? A. Two researchers begin to study the immune system B. NKT cells have been a part of research into cancer C. The relationship between the immune system and HIV D. Two scientists work to develop HIV vaccine C History is full of cases where dreams have been a pathway to creativity and discovery. A striking example is provided by Dr. Otto Loewi, a pharmacologist (藥理學(xué)家) and winner of a Nobel Prize. Loewi had spent years studying the chemical transmission of nerve impulses (脈搏). A tremendous breakthrough in his research came when he dreamed of an experiment three nights in a row. The first two nights he woke up and wrote down the experiment quickly and untidily on paper. But the next morning, he couldn’t tell what the notes meant. On the third night, he got up after having the dream. This time, instead of making notes he went straight to his laboratory and performed the important experiment. Loewi later said that if the experiment had occurred to him while awake he would have rejected it. Loewi’s experiment gives some insight into using dreams to produce creative solutions. Nervous feelings are reduced during dreaming, which may be especially useful in solving problems that require a fresh point of view. Being able to take advantage of dreams for solving is improved if you “set” yourself before retiring. Before you go to bed, try to think intently about a problem you wish to solve. Bury yourself in the problem by stating it clearly and reviewing all relevant information. Then use the suggestions listed in the previous section to catch your dreams. Although this method is not guaranteed to produce a novel solution or a new insight, it is certain to be an adventure. About half of a group of college students using the method for a week recalled a dream that helped them solve a personal problem. 9. The main idea of this passage is that _________. A. very little is really known about the meaning of dreams B. it is possible to “catch” one’s dreams by planning before going to sleep C. dreams can be useful in producing creative solutions to one’s problems D. Loewi’s experiment helped in the study of transmission of nerve impulses 10. The first paragraph is mainly organized by _________. A. classifying types of experiments B. summarizing the work of one researcher C. paring and exploring historical cases D. telling in time order about one man’s research 11. If Loewi had thought of the experiment while awake, he would have _________. A. asked someone else to do it B. thought it was a bad idea C. tried it out on his own D. thought it was a wise idea 12. The author probably thinks that _________. A. nervous feelings may stop someone thinking of useful ideas B. dreaming is of very little value to most people C. Loewi should not have conducted his experiment D. college students should not try out dream experiments D Today just as technology changed the face of industry, farms have experienced an “agricultural revolution”. On the farm of today, machines provide almost all the power. One of the most important benefits will be the farm puter. A few forward-looking farmers are already using puters to help them run their farms more efficiently. The puters help them keep more accurate records so they can make better decisions on what crops to plant, how much livestock (家畜) to buy, when to sell their products, and how much profit they can expect. Many puter panies have been developing special puter programs just for farmers. Programs are being written for pig producers, grain farmers, potato farmers, and dairy farmers. In the future, farmers will be able to purchase puter programs made to their needs. Because of the growing importance of puters on the farm, students at agricultural colleges are required to take puter classes in addition to their normal agricultural courses. There can be no doubt that farmers will rely on puters even more in the future. While the old-time farm depended on horse power, and modern farms depend on machine power, farms of the future will depend on puter power. Another technological advance which is still in the experimental stage is the robot, a real “mechanized hired hand” that will be able to move and, in some ways, think like a human being. Agricultural engineers believe that puter-aided robots will make shocking changes in farming before the end of the century. Unlike farmers of the present, farmers of the future will find that many day-to-day tasks will be done for them. Scientists are now developing robots that will be able to shear (修剪) sheep, drive tractors, and harvest fruit. Even plex jobs will be done by robots. For example, in order to milk their cows, farmers must first drive them into the barn, then connect them to the milking machines, watch the machines, and disconnect them when they are finished. In the future, this will all be done by robots. In addition, when the milking is pleted, the robots will automatically check to make sure that the milk is pure. The plete change of the farm is far in the future, but engineers expect that some robots will be used before long. 13. According to the passage, puters can not help farmers decide _______. A. how much money they can earn from their products B. whether to plant a certain kind of crop C. what livestock to raise D. when to sell their products 14. Which of the following statements is true? A. Farmers in the future will depend totally on puters. B. Farmers mainly use machines on their farms at present. C. Both puters and robots have been in use on today’s farms. D. Students at agricultural colleges needn’t take their normal agricultural courses. 15.What is the best title for the whole passage? A. puter, Farmers’ Best Friend B. Farmers in The Future C. The Agricultural Revolution D. puters and Robots 閱讀新題型: Why do some people have many friends while others do not? 16__ However, it is not so. Let’s look at two psychological experiments which will give you the key to happy interpersonal relations. The first experiment is called the “Hawthorne effect” after Hawthorne, Illinois, where the experiment took place. A group of psychologists examined the work patterns of two groups of workers in the Western Electric pany. __17 .The psychologists changed the working conditions for one group twice but left the other group alone. They were surprised to find that productivity increase on both occasions and in both groups. They concluded that the increase in productivity came from the attention given to the workers by the management. It had increased their motivation and so they had worked harder. In other words, if you take an interest in others, they will want to please you and you will have good relations with them. ___18__ After Martin Luther King, Jr was killed in the 1960s, a teacher, Jane Elliott, living in an all-white town decided to help her class of young children understand why the Civil Rights Movement had been necessary in America. She divided the class into two groups: one with blue eyes and the other with brown eyes. Other eye colours such as hazel or green were excluded from his exercise. Then she told the class that brown-eyed people were cleverer than blue-eyed ones because of an agent for brown colour found in their blood. Blue -eyed people were stupid, lazy and not to be trusted. Jane Elliott did not need to say any more. The brown -eyed students quickly got used to their new role as the leaders of the class. The blue-eyed students became quiet and withdrawn. Then she discovered something very interesting. Four poor brown-eyed readers began to read fluently in a way they had never done before. __ 19__ .So if you want to be successful and happy, take an interest in others whether they are your classmates or workmates. Congratulate them on their successes and sympathize(同情) with them in their troubles. _20__ . A. Before the experiment the management talked to both groups of workers and explained that they wanted to find the best working environment for them. B. Remember that the way you treat others will decide their attitude and behaviour to you. C. The second experiment shows what happens to personal relations if you are rude to or ignore(忽略) others. D. The ones who have more friends usually are those who care about others. E. Jane Elliott had shown that the way people are treated affects not only their behaviour but also their confidence and their performance. F. You may even imagine that this ability was something they were born with because it seems so effortless to them. G. The second experiment tells us what teachers said has a great effect on the students 第三部分: When I was a young child, my parents often told me that it was time that taught a man everything. I didn’t understand and wondered why 21 had such a big influence 22 a person. I thought I could grow up quickly to find it out as an adult. But now, 23 I e to knock at the door of adulthood, I feel 24 to express my own 25 on this saying. I know that I am just a high school student with very few experiences.
