It is in the Himalayan (喜瑪拉雅) Mountains between Nepal(尼泊爾) and China, and it is 8900 meters high. The group climbed for several days. Then there was an accident. The heavy ice and snow hurt ten of the women. They had to stop climbing. The other five went on climbing. Only Ms Tabei was able to climb the last 70 meters. She was standing on the top of the world. She was the first woman there. Ms Tabei was 35 years old at the time. She started climbing mountains in 1960. She still climbs mountains. She is not an ordinary Japanese housewife. Ms Tabei makes money for her trips by teaching English and piano to children. Earlier studies have shown that teenagers are more likely (可能) to make irrational decisions than people from any other age group, including children and adults. Is it that teenagers are too young to tell right from wrong? Not really. So what’s the reason? According to Laurence, a teacher from a US university, the reason is that teenagers care a lot about how their peers (同齡人) view them—that is “peer influence”. As children enter their teenage years, they spend more time with their friends and classmates, and also they care more about what they think of them. This makes teenagers make decisions without thinking about the costs. In a test, a group of teenagers were asked to play a video driving game. When they played with their friends watching around them, they took more chances and drove more carelessly because that would increase their possibility of winning. But when they played alone, they drove more safely. Why do peers have such a big influence on teens’ behavior? As Laurence sees it, a teenager’s brain is like a car with a good accelerator (油門) but a weak brake (剎車). The “accelerator” is fully developed by teenage years while the “brake” is still not fully developed. When teenagers are watched by their peers, they usually push hard on the accelerator. With their weak brake, it is likely that they are going to end up in an accident. But the good news is that a violent (暴力的)teenager doesn’t necessarily become a violent adult. About two-thirds to three-quarters of violent youth grow out of it. “They get more self-controlled.” 1. What does the underlined word “irrational” in the 2nd paragraph mean? A. Quick. B. Crazy. C. Careful. 2. Why are teenagers likely to make wrong decisions according to the text? A. They like difficult tasks. B. They don’t care about costs. C. They care a lot about what their peers think of them. 3. How does Laurence explain the influence of peer pressure on teens’ behavior? A. By comparing it with how a car works. B. By comparing it with an accident. C. By showing research findings. 4. What can we learn from the text? A. Teenagers are easy to have traffic accidents. B. Peer influence is bad on teenagers. C. Most of the teenagers become less violent when they grow up. 參考答案1B 2C 3A 4C Passage 3 (2019中考保健與健康類選練) Many of us don’t pay attention to the importance of eye care. Americans throw away about 1 ton of rubbish per person every year.Thats 2000 pounds of rubbish! Most of the rubbish gets covered in big holes in the round called landfills(垃圾掩埋法). A lot of this rubbish can be recycled,or turned back to something useful. The main things we recycle today are made of metal and paper. People recycle for many reasons. One of the main reasons is to protect resources(資源).Making new cans out of old ones means less aluminum(鋁) is needed for new cans. This leads to a second reason people recycle:it saves energy.Recycling old aluminum cans take much less energy than making new aluminum. To make new aluminum, you need to mine metal ore(礦石) from the ground, remove it,and refine it,into a finished metal. Recycling also protects valuable land.By recycling,we produce less rubbish. That means fewer landfills are needed for dropping our rubbish.Because metals are some what costly to make, they are the worlds most recycled materials.About two-thirds of all steel(鋼) is recycled. Almost all drink cans are made of aluminum.Americans recycle about one-third of their used aluminum cans.Empty cans are sent to special factories. There, they are cleaned, melted, and made into new pieces of aluminum. Watching nature, watching people and watching animals communicate with each other provide some of the simplest ways to life’s biggest problems. This became clearer to me yesterday. It caused me to ask myself, “How do I respond (反應(yīng)) to the storms in life?” People usually run when it starts to rain. I love to walk in it, stand on my front door and feel it. I grew up doing it and have never really felt the fear many people do. The animal world senses changes in the weather far earlier than humans. My dog, Ricky, begins to shake long before the storm is close enough to be noticed. I was about to feed my three dogs yesterday and as usual, I let them out in the yard first. They didn’t move when thunder came across the skies. So I placed their food in their bowls and called Ricky into the kitchen. Ricky was just standing there in place next to his bowl. The thunder became louder, which forced him to stop eating his meal. Then I watched Phil. He made his way across the kitchen floor and stood over Ricky’s bowl. He ate all the remaining food. Generally, if Ricky was standing there, he wouldn’t dare (敢) come close. But today, he took advantage (優(yōu)勢(shì)) of the storm and got what he wanted. His hope for the prize outweighed (勝過(guò)) his fear of the storm. That’s when it hit me. As men, we face all kinds of storms. They come in unannounced. Sometimes we stay in a corner or under the blankets, hoping it will all pass. However, if you dare put your head out, you’ll discover there’re people doing what they must to get what they must have out of life. Isn’t it time you decided to take advantage of the storm? 1. According to the writer, answers to life ______. A. are difficult to find B. lie around us C. are simple to understand D. make people become fearless 2. From the passage we can learn that the writer ______. A. enjoys the rain B. fears thunder C. hates the storm D. cares little about the weather 3. According to the passage, what hit the writer most? A. Phil wasn’t afraid of the storm. B. Ricky stopped eating food. C. Phil ate the rest of Ricky’s food. D. Ricky sensed the storm earlier than he. 4. What would be the best title for the passage? A. Find out Answers to Life B. Take Advantage of the Storm C. Stop Storms in our Daily Life D. Pay Attention to Everyday Events
